What’s new with BQA and DACQA

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and Dairy Animal Care and Quality Assurance (DACQA) focus on best management practices that look at the day to day husbandry practices used in caring for cattle that provide beef for family’s tables across the United States and abroad. The National BQA program continually works with all sectors of the beef and dairy industries to improve the content, credibility, and the uniformity of standards for raising food animals to assure the quality of beef products.

Feeder Cattle Review: Cattle futures volatile

Compared to last week, there was some early fireworks show on this holiday shortened week with a volatile ride in the cattle futures and major moves in the grain trade. Several auctions held special yearling sales this week, on Monday yearling feeders were mostly steady to 3.00 lower at two of the major auctions at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City with 6,660 head and Joplin Regional Stockyards offering 5,395 on a yearling special. On Tuesday feeder contracts traded limit to near limit lower and auctions responded with caution flags waving with several auctions 5.00-10.00 lower.

Miner Institute: Getting research on the right track

Recently the National Research Council (NRC) published an important report entitled “Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability.” The NRC is our nation’s pre-eminent research body and has a long history of publishing insightful reports on science and society. Some have been highly influential while others have languished with seemingly little impact. This latest report lays out a compelling vision for the needed research in animal agriculture to sustain future U.S. and global food production systems.

Weather forecast favorable for much of U.S.

The July weather outlook from the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center suggests a large portion of the U.S. could have cooler-than-average temperatures and higher-than-average rainfall.

To go with that, the center does not forecast any drought development in the bulk of the U.S. for July and possibly beyond. However, the West Coast and California in particular appear to remain in drought weather and conditions.

USDA takes first step to import fresh beef from Brazil, Argentina

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is amending its regulations to allow fresh beef into the United States from Brazil and Argentina under specific conditions that mitigate risk of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), the agency said on Monday.

Consumer Trends: Trends in antibiotics

Between 2010 and 2030, the global consumption of antibiotics will increase by 67 percent, according to a new study called “Global trends in antimicrobial use in food animals,” published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Chicken and pork production will be responsible for most of that increase.
